Boyle County Impresses in 34-7 win over Frederick Douglass - Recap Presented by Kroger
When I asked for predictions before the game, 64% of the 279 people who voted picked Frederick Douglass, but one Boyle County fan said “Rebs by 90.”
They weren’t far off.
The #7 ranked Boyle County Rebels combined a stifling defense and balanced, steady offense to blow out the #4 ranked Frederick Douglass Broncos 34-7 on a cold, rainy Friday night in Lexington. The Rebels, who were solid on the ground all night, mixed in some key passes to Cole Lanter to keep the Broncos off-balance.
After a shaky punt gave the Rebels great field position, quarterback Jagger Gillis punched in a short rushing TD a few plays later to get Boyle on the board first.
The Rebels recovered a Jackson Smith onside kick. Smith, who is committed to UK, was impressive kicking and punting for Boyle tonight. That led to this Gillis to Lanter score making it 14-0.
After moving the ball near midfield, Douglass threw a long pass that was intercepted by Sage Dawson, who returned it into Douglass territory. That set up a short Avery Bodner TD run to extend the Boyle lead to 21.
On the Broncos’ next possession they went for it on 4th down but threw an incomplete pass to recent Kentucky commit Dane Key. The Rebels took advantage with another Gillis to Lanter touchdown. The 2-pt conversion failed. That made it 27-0 at halftime.
After forcing a punt to start the second half, the Rebels got a long run from Bodner to inside the Bronco 5. Gillis punched it in for a 33-0 Rebel lead.
Douglass got on the board to cut it to 33-7 late in the third quarter on a Samuel Cornett to Cameron Dunn touchdown pass.

The Broncos had a chance at another late TD, but Lanter broke up a 4th down pass in the end zone.
“I think he’s the best wide receiver in the state, no doubt,” Gillis said about Lanter.
The Broncos were plagued all night by penalties and turnovers and had a hard time stopping the Rebels ground game. The Rebels rolled up 272 yards on 51 carries. The pre-snap penalties happened far too often. Though the Boyle County faithful brought a large crowd, it certainly wasn’t Kroger Field vs. Florida loud.
Douglass (9-1) will need to clean things up, but are still one of the favorites to win the 5A. They host Montgomery County in the first round next week. Key, who committed to UK Thursday night, had a nice 36-yard catch. He finished with five catches for 54 yards.
Boyle County (9-1) whose only loss came to #3 LCA (35-28) back in Week 2, hosts Anderson County in the Rebels’ quest to repeat as 4A champions.
Though most people decided to pick against the Rebels, this eight-week-old knows that is not a good decision.
