Following a Jackson Wasik rushing touchdown fresh out of the halftime break, Lexington Catholic took a 21-14 lead over the top-ranked Boyle County Rebels with 9:15 remaining in the third quarter. From there on out however, the ‘Rebs scored 42 unanswered points to roll the Knights 56-21 to stay undefeated (6-0) in this week’s Kroger KSR Game of the Week.

Boyle County junior WR/DB Montavin Quisenberry had himself a monster game, totaling four total touchdowns. Quisenberry ran back a kickoff return, rushed for two scores and hauled in a 70-yard touchdown on just the third play of the game. He received an offer from Kentucky back in October 2022. Boyle County head coach Justin Haddix spoke highly of Quisenberry following the win.

“He’s a special player,” Haddix said. “We’ve got a lot of great players here. We’re very proud of them.”

The ‘Rebs came out of the gate firing on all cylinders, as the aforementioned Quisenberry took a Sage Dawson screen pass 70 yards to the house on just the third play of the game. After forcing a Lexington Catholic three-and-out, senior running back Avery Bodner found the end zone for his 12th rushing touchdown of the season. It looked as if Boyle County would rout the Knights from the get-go, but that was not the case early.

Boyle County jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead, but Lexington Catholic settled in and dominated the second quarter. Following a four-minute drive which consisted of two third-down conversions, Jackson Wasik found Henry Clay transfer receiver Jackson Kreutzer in the corner end zone for their first six points of the night.

The Knights then took advantage of a Sage Dawson interception as they drove right back down the field, capping things off with Wasik’s second passing touchdown of the night, this time to sophomore RB Joaquin Pereira. Before you knew it, the game was tied at the half.

Coming out of the break, things continued to go well for the Knights. Wasik hit Kreutzer in stride for a 25-yard gain, setting them up nicely in Boyle territory. After making their way down to the five-yard line, the Knights called a QB keeper for Wasik, which he converted for six more points. Suddenly, Lexington Catholic had rattled off 21 unanswered points to take a 21-14 lead over the top-ranked ‘Rebs.

Then Montavin Quisenberry decided to flip this game on its head.

Lexington Catholic made the mistake of kicking to Quisenberry, and he made them pay. The three-star ran the kick-off 80 yards back for the score, knotting the game back up at 21-21. The electric junior provided the Rebels with a much-needed spark, as they scored 35 unanswered points following the play. The ‘Rebs go when Montavin goes.

Boyle County forced an immediate Catholic three-and-out and quickly reclaimed the lead on a 65-yard passing touchdown from Sage Dawson to junior receiver Geordon Brown. The Knights would fumble on their next possession, setting the Rebels back up with great field position. Sage Dawson quickly hit Avery Bodner in stride for a 25-yard score and suddenly the Knights were down by 14.

Talk about a momentum shift.

The magic had worn off for the Knights, as they continued to shoot themselves in the foot. After punting once again, a 30-yard Quisenberry rushing touchdown put the Rebels up by 21. Montavin then rattled off another 30-yard rushing score following another Catholic punt, putting this one away with authority. Quisenberry was pleased with his performance following the win.

“I feel like I did pretty good today,” he said. “The team stepped up. We always know that [Lexington Catholic] is going to come to play. We’re their Super Bowl every time. We knew it wasn’t going to be a lay-down game. We came out, executed, and got the win on the scoreboard.”

Boyle County head coach Justin Haddix spoke highly of Lexington Catholic following their win, Boyle County’s 11th in a row.

“Hats off to them, they played a great game,” Haddix said. “We challenged them at the half and when we came out, it didn’t look good off the bat. This talks about the leadership of our football team coming back and playing the way we did.”

The Rebels improve to 6-0 with the win and will finish out their regular season against the likes of Russell, Lincoln, and Wayne counties before a massive rematch with Frederick Douglass to close out the regular season. Lexington Catholic falls to 2-4 with the loss with big-time matchups against Lloyd Memorial (6-0) and No. 14 Scott County remaining on the schedule.
