Bracketology: Kentucky vs. Auburn for the final No. 1 seed?

The SEC Tournament tips off tomorrow. With five days until Selection Sunday, it’s looking more and more like Kentucky and Auburn could be playing for the final No. 1 seed in Tampa. In his latest Bracketology update, Joe Lunardi said he believes Gonzaga and Arizona have two of the No. 1 seeds locked up, while the other two will belong to either Baylor/Kansas or Kentucky/Auburn.
“With the major conference tournaments set to begin on Tuesday, it’s fair to wonder how much is really up for grabs in terms of No. 1 seeds. I believe two of the spots are all but locked — Gonzaga and Arizona — and the remaining two will come from the Big 12 (Baylor or Kansas) and SEC (Auburn or Kentucky). It’s also possible the Big 12 gets Baylor and Kansas on the top line — especially if both Auburn and Kentucky bow out early at the SEC tourney. Entering the final weekend, it appeared Duke or Wisconsin could make a late push for a 1-seed, but those hopes seem dashed with their respective losses to North Carolina and Nebraska.”
CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm agrees.
“Auburn and Kentucky are in contention for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. If one of them wins the SEC tournament, it is very likely that team will be on the top line on Selection Sunday.”

For now, both Lunardi and Palm have Kentucky as the No. 2 seed in the East Region. Lunardi pairs the Cats with No. 1 seed Kansas, while Palm puts Kentucky with No. 1 seed Baylor.

Kentucky is Lunardi’s sixth overall team behind Auburn. Palm has the Cats as the top No. 2 seed with Auburn as the No. 1 seed in the Midwest. Kentucky is No. 6 on the Bracket Matrix, an aggregate of NCAA Tournament projections, behind Kansas.
