Brad White Addresses his Future at Kentucky
Ahead of the Kentucky football offseason, there is a lot of talk about roster turnover. While most of us initially gravitate to players in the transfer portal, this also applies to coaches. Kentucky went 4-8. When SEC teams go to 4-8, there are coaching changes. That’s how this sport works.
In a profession filled with drastic turnover, Brad White has been a staple in Lexington. He arrived ahead of the 2018 season as an outside linebackers coach and has been the defensive coordinator for the last six seasons. He’s been handsomely rewarded for bringing consistent success to the Kentucky defense. According to USA Today, in 2023 he was the 14th-highest paid assistant coach in college football.
Part of the reason that salary is so high is because other schools have tried to pry him away. His name is often mentioned with other defensive coordinator vacancies and even a few head coaching ones. The most notable was when Brian Kelly tried to hire him as his first defensive play-caller at LSU.
Over the last few weeks, White’s name is back in the coaching carousel news cycle. On3’s Pete Nakos has consistently reported that Brad White is a name to watch as Mike Norvell looks for a new defensive coordinator at Florida State.
Following the season-ending loss to Louisville, White was asked how much we should read into reports that his name is tied to other jobs.

“It’s a yearly deal. It’s more of a testament to what this defensive unit does year in and year out and what this coaching staff does,” Brad White told reporters.
“Again, on those deals, I’ve got to sit down and talk with Coach (Stoops) in terms of making sure this is where I’m safe. We all got to talk about it. Listen, just like the players have to own up to what they’ve done wrong, I’ve gotta sit down and get corrected some things that we need to get corrected, and that’s where my focus is. My focus is coming in tomorrow, figuring out how we need to get the roster right, and then throughout the next month or two, figuring out what kind of scheme we need to get right. Hopefully, I’ve got the ability to do that here.”
Norvell already made one big move at Florida State. Following a season-ending loss to Utah, Gus Malzahn resigned as the head coach at UCF to become the offensive coordinator for the Seminoles.
