Brandon Boston Jr. will fight for a roster spot on the San Antonio Spurs going into the 2024-25 season.

According to multiple reports and confirmed by the Spurs’ website, the franchise has signed Boston to a contract. Terms of the deal have yet to be announced, but it’s likely that the former Kentucky Wildcat will start out on a training camp deal in hopes of making the finalized 15-man roster for Opening Night.

Boston, a three-year pro with the Los Angeles Clippers (2021-24), appeared in 33 total games while averaging 5.2 points and 1.6 rebounds in 10.8 minutes per outing this past season. The Clippers elected not to extend a qualifying offer to Boston during the offseason, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Boston played just one (forgettable) season at Kentucky in 2020-21 — otherwise known as the COVID season. The 6-foot-7 wing averaged 11.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game for the Wildcats under former head coach John Calipari but shot just 35.5 percent overall from the floor. Kentucky finished that season 9-16 as Boston went No. 51 in the 2021 NBA Draft.

With the Spurs, Boston will (potentially) team up alongside another Kentucky alum in Keldon Johnson. Johnson is about to enter his fifth season as a pro, all with the Spurs. He averaged 15.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in 29.5 minutes per outing in 2023-24. Boston could also join forces with rising superstar Victor Wembanyama and future Hall of Fame point guard Chris Paul if he ends up making the final roster.

Actually being a part of that 15-man team will be easier said than done though. After five consecutive seasons of winning under 35 games, the Spurs and head coach Gregg Popovich will likely look to make a postseason run in 2024-25. The front office brought in Paul and Harrison Barnes in the offseason and also selected UConn’s Stephon Castle with the 4th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. Wembanyama turning into an All-Star caliber player after one just season has fast-tracked the team’s rebuild.

Boston has played in 105 total NBA games through his three seasons but has yet to carve out a role in the rotation. He’s only 22 years old though, so his best basketball could still be ahead of him. Figuring things out in San Antonio under a legendary coach should be a great opportunity for him in the long term.

Not many people can say they’ve dunked on Giannis Antetokounmpo — Brandon Boston Jr. can though…
