Heading into the offseason, the biggest question regarding next year’s team was the point guard position. With Georgia Amoore leaving for the WNBA, there was a massive, massive void left to be filled. Then, Kenny Brooks managed to bring in 2x All-ACC star Tonie Morgan out of Georgia Tech.

Brooks coached against Morgan twice when he was at Virginia Tech. The first time around, the 5-foot-8 point guard recorded seven points, seven rebound and four assists in a solid 31-minute outing as a freshman. However, the following year, Morgan took over and dominated.

On the road against a No. 19 Virginia Tech team, Morgan tallied 26 points on 9-18 shooting. She also put up four rebounds, three steals and two assists on the night, and that came just four days after she was three rebounds shy of a triple-double against Boston College.

Brooks recalls that game against the Yellowjackets very well.

“You talk about familiarity — I coached against her a couple of times,” Brooks explained to KSR in his interview on The Memorial Memo. “We played them the last year I was at Virginia Tech, and we played exceptionally well — and probably would have been a 40-point win — but she just played so — we couldn’t stop her. We could not stop her.”

What makes Morgan so dangerous? Her innate ability to get penetration at the rim for starters, but she also have pro-level passing abilities.

“She has the ability to get downhill to score,” Brooks said. “She’s strong, mid-range game is great. She handles the ball, she facilitates in a manner that there’s no question in my mind she’ll be a WNBA Draft prospect. Having her here to really bridge our point guard situations. Then, add that depth, that experience to an already experienced group is something that we knew we needed. I think we hit a home run with her, and I think she’s gonna be exceptional for us.”

“Big Blue Nation’s going to absolutely love her,” he added. “She’s going to come in with the right attitude because she’s got goals, and that’s a pretty good combination. When you have goals and you have an opportunity to be able to be on a bigger stage, I think she’s looking forward to taking advantage of it. We couldn’t have asked for any better going into the portal.”
