BTI's Rants and Ramblings: Is there a difference in recruits from East and West of the Mississippi?

by:Bryan1303/06/14
Basketball players from the western half of the country have always had to deal with a stereotype: SOFTNESS.  I remember Tayshaun Prince getting that label for much of his early time at Kentucky, in part because of his thin body and his general smooth game which sometimes appeared lazy.  Teams like UCLA and Arizona have been plagued in the past by having soft teams, often stocked with west coast guys. But is that stereotype actually hold water?  Calipari has recruited a total of 23 FRESHMAN to come to Kentucky.  This does not include Jon Hood and Daniel Orton, who committed under Gillispie, or Jarrod Polson, who came on as a walk-on.  Of the guys Calipari brought in, here they are separated by hometowns from east and west of the Mississippi River: Guys from East of the Mississippi (15 total) John Wall (North Carolina) Eric Bledsoe (Alabama) Demarcus Cousins (Alabama) Brandon Knight (Florida) Doron Lamb (New York) Stacey Poole (Florida) Anthony Davis (Illinois) Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (New Jersey) Marquis Teague (Indiana) Alex Poythress (Tennessee) Nerlens Noel (Massachusetts) James Young (Michigan) Dakari Johnson (New York) Dominique Hawkins (Kentucky) Derrick Willis (Kentucky) (*All 4 of Kentucky's commits for 2014 are from East of the Mississippi) Guys from West of the Mississippi (8 total) Terrence Jones (Oregon) Kyle Wiltjer (Oregon) Archie Goodwin (Arkansas) Willie Cauley-Stein (Kansas) Julius Randle (Texas) Aaron Harrison (Texas) Andrew Harrison (Texas) Marcus Lee (California) There are some hits and misses in guys from the East no doubt.  But if rank Calipari's top players in his time in Lexington, I would think most would say Davis, MKG, Knight, Wall, Cousins, Noel, and Randle.  Six of those seven guys were from the eastern half of the country.  Looking at the list of 8 guys from west of the Mississippi, Wiltjer was a transfer, Goodwin and the Harrisons have been wildly inconsistent freshman, Cauley-Stein was barely a factor as a freshman, and Lee has been no factor this season.  Randle is a stud and Jones was a stud despite driving some fans crazy.  Two out of eight. In the grand scheme, this is just another way to look at recruiting.  You would think great players can be great no matter which part of the country they come from.  So this may all just be a coincidence.  But up to this point in his 5 years as coach, John Calipari has seen a more significant amount of success from East guys than those from the West. Any relevance at all to this list for you?
