This is the final year of Bud Dupree’s contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and while it’s still possible the front office will offer him an extension in training camp, the former Cat says he’s willing to risk playing it out to prove himself.

“I’m straight. I’d rather just be like this right now,” Dupree told reporters yesterday. “For one year, I’m going to go out and do my thing. I’m going to prove.”

The Steelers picked up Dupree’s fifth-year option in the spring, which guarantees him $9.2 million this season; however, with only 20 sacks over four seasons, he needs a big year to land a big deal like the one former teammate and edge rusher Za’Darius Smith signed with Green Bay. Dupree said he’s embracing that challenge.

“It’s fun,” Dupree said of Za’Darius’ four-year $66 million contract with the Packers. “That just puts more fire up under you to go out and have a great year. Guys are having their best years in their contract year. Confidence is key with yourself and within your team, the unit.”

You got this, Bud.
