On that wacky draft night, a few things happened that went unnoticed (at least to me). I missed out on this Calipari's Instagram above, but I just read an article explaining the situation. Apparently,
a NBA Draft crowd member mistook Coach Cal for Cav's owner Dan Gilbert. Click the previous link to see the NY Daily News story on the happening.
“Hey, Dan,” a fan shouted at the Kentucky coach.
That’s right, Dan, as in Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert. Calipari was so amused by the fan’s case of mistaken identity that he called him out of the stands and onto the floor at Barclays Center to take a photo.
I found this quite comical for several reasons. One, how the hell are you an avid sports fan and not recognize John Calipari right off the bat? Two, how do you confuse him for
this comic-sans loving slob? Three, if you're going to rock that much Cavaliers gear, you better know what your owner looks like.
Good move on Coach Cal to bring the guy out for a photo, even if he was laughing hysterically at the guy on t he inside. Oh, and you may have picked up on this ridiculous line at the tail end of the NYDN piece:
It’ll surely be a moment the man will tell his buddies about when Coach Cal is coaching LeBron James in Cleveland in 2014.
Hopefully that was sarcasm by the writers, because
there is no way LeBron will ever do anything for Dan Gilbert after that letter and you can sure bet Calipari isn't heading the Cleveland, even if Gilbert turns out to be a wizard with his Anthony Bennett #1 pick.
