After letting the world know that a decision was on the way, we finally have our announcement, and it’s good news for Kenny Brooks and company.

Charlotte transfer guard Dazia Lawrence announced Sunday on social media that she has committed to Kentucky women’s basketball. She chose the ‘Cats over Marquette, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Florida State, among others. A return to Charlotte was also in play.

The 5-foot-8 guard averaged a career-high 18.2 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 2.7 APG, and 1.8 SPG on 42.6% shooting from the field in 2023-24. She’s a career 34% three-point shooter and has started 61 of 91 college games played — all with the 49ers.

This seemed to be a very quick process for the First-Team All-AAC guard. As soon as we learned that Lawrence and UK had been in contact, it was up from there. Lawrence recently took a visit to UK, and it was (clearly) enough to convince her that Lexington would be her next home.

It also helps that Kenny Brooks brought on former Charlotte assistant Ciara Gregory to the staff. Gregory spent the last five seasons at Charlotte, and she spent most of her time working with the guards — you have to think that she was a huge part of Lawrence’s decision.

With Lawrence being a tad bit undersized, she uses her quickness and offensive prowess to create shots. She also creates highlights in the process.

Lawrence joins an already jam-packed backcourt, but she may be the best pure scorer in it. Now that she has committed, there are 11 players on the roster. If you go by a typical Kenny Brooks team, then he still needs roughly 1-2 more pieces. There’s a good chance that the last piece would be his daughter Gabby Brooks, who would be a redshirt freshman next season.

Regardless, there is plenty of time left in the offseason for Brooks to round out the roster.
