Chuck Hayes and Tubby Smith Reunite
Two beacons of basketball in the Bluegrass are back together and it feels so good.
Chuck Hayes, mistaken once by a dumb blogger as Keldon Johnson’s Dad, shared the following photo on Instagram alongside his former Kentucky head coach, Orlando “Tubby” Smith. For Kentucky fans of a certain era, hard-nosed defense combined with heart and hustle from an undersized big like Chuck Hayes defined what Kentucky basketball was all about.

This picture have not have been recently taken. Regardless, Hayes’ post gives us an opportunity to relive some of that combo’s great moments from the early 00s on a #FlashbackFriday. Remember that time they made a UK Basketball version of MTV Cribs?

One of Hayes’ finest moments was in the closing seconds of the SEC Tournament. No. 44 went right at LSU’s Big Baby Davis and scored the go-ahead bucket with 7.9 remaining in overtime. He then contested a shot at the other end and grabbed a rebound to secure a one-point UK victory.
This video is a little too heavy on the soundbites for my taste but I’m sure you’ll enjoy seeing much, much younger versions of Kevin Stallings and Rick Stansbury.
