College Football Week 6 Recap

Good morning everyone on this chilly Sunday morning! If it’s not obvious, Kentucky did not have a game yesterday. A week to rest up is what this team really needed and probably the one team in college football that needed it the most. Even still, college football did go on and here are some of the major takeaways.

#19 UCF @ Cincinnati

Let’s start with the big game on Friday, shall we? The shocker of what has to be a bummer for a UCF fan. The Knights of UCF lost to the Bearcats on Friday, 27-24. In case you did not see earlier in the week, it seemed like the Bearcats were already gaining momentum into Friday Night Lights.

Probably the most talked-about topic going into Week 6 of College Football was the major field renovation for the Bearcats. However, the Bearcats did not need the field to be fancy’d up on Friday to probably finish the “we want Bama” talk from UCF fans – which isn’t a bad thing.

The win for the Bearcats ended a 19-game winning streak for the UCF Knights in the AAC which might ultimately take them out of the Top 25 this coming week. To get there, it took a pick-6 from freshman Ahmad Gardner.

Defense is not the only thing that kept UCF from winning. With the Bearcats steady diet of 42 rushing attempts, more than half of them came from their junior running back, Michael Warren II. On 23 carries, Warren collected 133 yards with an average of 5.8 per carry.  Even with the big numbers from the running back, there were no touchdowns for the junior. Like what the Seattle Seahawks tried to do in the Super Bowl against the Patriots, they threw the ball in the red-zone to get the scores. Same style but different result as Bearcats sophomore quarterback from Louisville, KY Desmond Ridder connected for a passing completion of 17-31 for 149 yards and 2 passing TD’s with a passing rating of just a little over 110. 

Also, this is pure gold.

#25 Michigan State Spartans @ #4 Ohio State Buckeyes

I cannot leave out this big game up in Columbus. In their biggest win of the year for the new-look Buckeyes, they showed the reason why they collected that #4 ranking in the Top 25 this week. Going into this matchup, I looked at this as the first eye test for Ohio State and Georgia-transfer quarterback, Justin Fields, and did he deliver. He was also featured in a College GameDay interview yesterday about his new team. Take a look!

To answer from the interview, Fields threw for 206 yards on 68% completion rating (17-25) and threw 2 TD’s to lead the Buckeyes at home against the Michigan State Spartans, 34-10.

#7 Auburn Tigers @ #10 Florida Gators

The College GameDay game did not disappoint whatsoever. Let’s face it, two SEC teams in the top 10 battle it out, it’s always going to be an amazing game.

First… if this would’ve been a fumble recovery for a score, I would’ve been proud as a fellow big man whose dream was always to run in a scoop and score in a football game.

Lastly, let me take my Chris Berman impression  of the day by saying… “BROWN IS RUMBLIN’ STUMBLIN’ BUMBLIN’ AS HE GETS THE DREAM SCOOP AND SCORE FOR ANY BIGMAN IN FOOTBALL BUT FALLS SHORT!”

Ok, I’m done, but this game was huge and should aggravate any of the BBN as the Cats had this team where they wanted them just three weeks ago at Kroger Field.

Well, what are you going to do? Good game for the Gators as they prevail at home, 24-13.

But did the game come with a cost at quarterback for Florida? Kyle Trask did go down in the game.

He did go off his own feet after the play and was checked for any major injuries but came back to finish the game which is a good sign not only for Trask but for Gator fans.

#14 Texas Longhorns vs. West Virginia Mountaineers

The Longhorns take care of business behind quarterback Sam Ehlinger, who threw for 211 yards and two TD’s but those weren’t the best play of the day and the reason why I want to bring this game up.

This might be a top 5 play so far of the College Football season and it came from sophomore defensive back D’Shawn Jamison of Texas.

This was one of two picks for Jamison as the Longhorns take care business in Morgantown, beating the Mountaineers, 42-31.

Tulsa @ #24 SMU

This game was an epic shootout but a game where defensive minds would cringe as both teams combined for a total of 940 all-purpose yards.

Now, this game went down to the wire as the SMU Mustangs held onto the win in Dallas over the Golden Hurricanes on what has to be the best catch of the day.

Like the Twitter graphic says, the SMU Mustangs grab their sixth win a row as they hold on to beat Tulsa, 43-37.

For Week 6 there were plenty of epic games but the plays teams were making out there were just ridiculous. Hope everyone enjoyed their day off of Kentucky Football with some more football.

Going into next week, we already know where College GameDay is going…

If Florida gets this one too, do the Playoff talks start? Well, we won’t know until next week but I want to end the post on this.

Here is a loving moment after the game this week as LSU head coach Ed Orgeron brought up a super-fan to come up during his post-game press conference!

Going to be a fun game next week down in Baton Rouge.
