Darian DeVries has emerged as top candidate for Indiana

Indiana’s latest search for a head men’s basketball coach could be coming to a close soon. After taking swings for Brad Stevens and Scott Drew, the Hoosiers appear to be closing in on a Big 12 head coach to become the next head coach in Bloomington.
Jeff Goodman is reporting that West Virginia head coach Darian DeVries has emerged as a top option for Indiana.
DeVries, 49, played at Northern Iowa and moved from graduate assistant to assistant coach at Creighton. The Iowa native spent two decades in Omaha working for both Dana Altman and Greg McDermott. After the 2018 season, DeVries left to become the next head coach at Drake in the Missouri Valley Conference. The coach spent six seasons with the Bulldogs and led this mid-major program to three NCAA Tournament appearances.
After upsetting Indiana State in the 2024 Missouri Valley Championship, Darian DeVries left Des Moines for Morgantown. In his first season at West Virginia, DeVries led the Mountaineers to a 19-13 (10-10) finish despite dealing with some significant injuries. All signs pointed to WVU receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament before the Selection Committee surprised everyone by leaving the Big 12 team out of the field of 68.

Darian DeVries could become a one-and-done at WVU. The head coach is a finalist along with Drake head coach Ben McCollum. Both are Iowa natives and expected to be involved in Iowa’s current coaching search. This could come down to a Indiana vs. Iowa decision.
The Hoosiers are very close to having their fourth head coach in a decade. Kentucky will face whoever the new coach is on Dec. 20 when the Hoosiers travel to Rupp Arena when this rivalry series is renewed.
