Davion Mintz invited his No. 1 fan to the Florida game
A few weeks ago, we told you about Davion Mintz‘s No. 1 fan Makenna Lunsford. The 16-year-old from Kansas had a special encounter with Mintz following the Cats’ win in Lawrence on January 29, which inspired him to score a career-high 21 points in his next game out. The days to follow have been a whirlwind for Lunsford, to say the least. At the end of her conversation with KSR, Lunsford plucked up the courage to ask Mintz to prom and he said yes, prompting their story to go viral.
The two kept in touch via social media, and Mintz invited Makenna and her mother Wendy to Lexington for a game. Of course, they said yes.
I met up with Makenna and Wendy at KSBar and Grille prior to the Florida game to catch up on a very surreal week. The two arrived in Lexington on Thursday and spent every waking minute taking in the Kentucky Basketball experience. They made a trip to Kentucky Branded to buy new gear, even running into Mintz’s parents by chance. A soccer player, Makenna also checked out the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex and Kentucky’s campus, where she got recognized by a few fans. After meeting the KSR crew and special pregame show guest Vince Marrow at KSBar, they headed to Rupp where the real “pinch me” moments began.
Makenna, Wendy, and Wendy’s father Jan were guests of Davion’s, so they sat in the players’ family section behind one of the goals. Wendy, whose father is the source of the family’s Kentucky Basketball fandom, recalled her first trip to Rupp growing up and wished the same for Makenna.
“I remember an usher was trying to direct me to my seat and I had to say, ‘Just give me a moment.’ I had to take it all in!”

Sitting with Mintz’s family, Makenna watched as he hit three three-pointers in the second half to help push the Cats to the 78-57 victory. After doing the postgame radio interview with Mike Pratt, Mintz met up with Makenna and took her and her mom on a private tour of Rupp Arena, yet another dream come true.
Makenna shared the pictures on Instagram, to which Davion replied, “Sis for life.” According to Wendy, he also told Makenna she’s his hero.
On Sunday, Makenna and Wendy headed to the Louisville airport to fly back home. They walked by one of the University of Louisville’s teams in the concourse, and apparently, the Cards did not take too kindly to Makenna’s new shirt.
Consider us Makenna’s No. 1 fans.
