The Governor’s Cup series is not the most popular rivalry in college football, but there is no denying the hatred. Their is absolutely zero love lost between the only Power Five programs in Bluegrass State. Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops has not shied away from the importance of this rivalry game. New Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm has mentioned multiple times how important this game will be for the Cardinals with him in charge.

Brohm double-down on that this week following a win at Miami that clinched a berth in the ACC Championship Game.

“We had to explain to our team yesterday in a lot of different ways that it needs to be erased for a full week. The full focus needs to be on this game because, in my opinion, this is the most important game of the rest of the season,” Brohm said Monday morning.

“We can talk about it all we want, this is the most important game. Our guys need to understand that preparing and trying to win this game needs to be the complete focus. If we want to make our fans happy, give them a good Thanksgiving, we need to go win that game.”

It’s not just an important game for UofL. Kentucky also wants a win badly. Star defensive tackle Deone Walker is not a fan of the program down I-64.

“I never liked Louisville. Even while I was getting recruited. I just don’t like the Cardinals. Their fans are kind of snobbish. Their players act entitled,” Walker told reporters on Tuesday evening. “A lot of pent up aggression towards them.”

Expect another heated battle when these two rivals meet at high noon on Thanksgiving Saturday. However, it’s not all hate. Walker stated that Louisville has “a great team” and a “great coaching staff”. Kentucky will need one of its best performances of the season to end the 2023 regular season at 7-5.

Rivalry football is here.
