Deone Walker Snubbed from Coaches' All-SEC Team
This morning four Kentucky Wildcats earned All-SEC honors from the Associated Press. The coaches shared their selections Thursday afternoon. The results are similar, with one glaring, enormous omission (and I mean that in the most literal sense).
Four players appear on the Coaches’ All-SEC Second Team: Ray Davis, Eli Cox, Barion Brown and Maxwell Hairston.
Notice anyone missing? Maybe the Goliath in the middle of Brad White’s defense.
Deone Walker was a First Team All-SEC selection by the media but not for the coaches? That’s weird. College Football Network tabbed Walker as a Third Team All-American, but he wasn’t one of the top eight defensive linemen in the SEC?
Make it make sense!
The principle of occam’s razor is that the simplest possible solution is often the correct one. What would the simplest solution be in this case? Coaches aren’t actually the ones who choose the players to be on the Coaches’ All-SEC team.
Do you think that Kirby Smart is laboring over his ballot? No, he’s busy on the road recruiting. The same can be said for all of the league’s other 13 coaches, except maybe Eli Drinkwitz. He strikes me as the type of due that takes this way too seriously. I digress.
The ballots are not cast directly by coaches, but in their name by their school’s respective sports information directors (SIDs). Tony Neely, Susan Lax and the entire crew do an outstanding job at Kentucky. The same cannot be said across the SEC. Some probably aren’t paying as close attention to other teams on Saturdays and that is why Deone Walker, one of the most dominant defensive players in the SEC, was omitted from this postseason honor.
