Derrick Ramsey spoke to the football team about adversity

A cornerstone of Freddie Maggard’s #4For40 player development program is bringing in former players to share their stories with the team. This week, Kentucky football legend Derrick Ramsey spoke to the team about how being benched early in his career taught him to deal with adversity.

“What did I do? For the next six weeks, I got my butt in the weight room, got in the film room and did an honest assessment of myself. And guys, I’m here to tell you, if I was the coach, I would have benched me too. I then made a deal with myself, if I ever get back on that field, they’re going to have to carry me off on a damn stretcher. Nobody’s taking this from me. Nobody.”

Ramsey led Kentucky to the 1976 SEC Championship and Peach Bowl, earning First Team All-SEC and Third Team All-American honors. He played in the NFL for nine seasons and later served as the athletic director at Kentucky State and Coppin State. He now serves as Secretary of the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet under Governor Matt Bevin.

“Derrick, if the team is losing, you either fire the coach or bench the quarterback. And I’m not losing my job.”
