Devin Askew will transfer to his 5th school in 6 years

The game “What School Does Devin Askew Play For Now?” has been a time-honored tradition with my friends and will continue for another year. On3’s Joe Tipton reported that the soon-to-be 23-year-old will enter the transfer portal, which will put Askew at this fifth school in six years.
How could Askew possibly have any eligibility left? After all, that Covid season felt like it was approximately 47 years ago. Well, that season didn’t count toward eligibility for anyone. After this time in Lexington, Askew bolted to Texas for one season, then moved further west to the University of California where he spent his junior year. In his second season at Cal, Askew only played six games due to a foot injury and earned a medical redshirt for his troubles.
Askew spent this most recent season with Long Beach State, where the former McDonald’s All-American flourished, averaging 18.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game.

One Covid year plus one medical redshirt year equals a sixth year of eligibility.
Kentucky’s disastrous 2020-21 team surprisingly featured three future NBA players but freshman Devin Askew wasn’t one of them. The lineage of elite John Calipari-coached freshman point guards led to high expectations, but Askew never seemed to fit the mold. He averaged just 6.5 points, 2.9 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game, contributing to the Wildcats’ 9-16 record.
While it is easy to laugh at Askew for pulling Van Wilder, it is hard to blame him for wanting to stay in college as long as he can in the era of NIL. He can likely make more money playing for a middle-of-the-road college team than he could make playing in the G League or even professionally overseas.
Regardless, here’s to one more year of “What School Does Devin Askew Play For Now?”
