A couple of 2012 NCAA national champions, Doron Lamb and Marquis Teague, joined Kentucky Sports Radio for a conversation on Thursday morning’s show. The starting backcourt for Kentucky’s last national championship team made the trip to KSBar and Grille in Lexington to discuss their time at Kentucky and their new podcast, “Backcourt Connection,” featuring stories from their playing days and commentary on the top stories in basketball.

With KSR, the radio conversation centered around that 2011-12 national championship season at Kentucky. They recalled playing with Anthony Davis, their tournament run, and being coached by John Calipari. They also wondered why Indiana fans still talk so much about the regular-season game while conveniently forgetting to mention that Kentucky got the Hoosiers back along UK’s championship run. Teague, an Indiana native, can’t escape that night in Bloomington, he said.

The former Wildcats also shared their opinions of Calipari’s move to Arkansas, saying it’s weird seeing him in red, but they will support their coach at his new school. They also like what they’ve seen out of Mark Pope and the new Kentucky team, especially the Duke win, and they had plans to watch Thursday’s practice after the KSR interview.

“Still Big Blue Nation forever,” Teague said.

Marquis Teague confirmed the scrimmages and Team NF

While reminiscing, Teague confirmed one of KSR’s favorite stories from the 2011-12 season: that he and his Kentucky teammates beat a team of NBA stars in a scrimmage on UK’s campus in the fall of 2011. There were many NBA players in Lexington to train during the 2011 NBA lockout, including most of the 2011-12 Oklahoma City Thunder (Kevin Durant, James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Kendrick Perkins, Nazr Mohammed, and others), LeBron James, Rajon Rondo, Eric Bledsoe, and more.

As the story goes, Kentucky’s top six players that championship season–Teague, Lamb, Michael-Kidd Gilchrist, Terrence Jones, Anthony Davis, and Darius Miller–scrimmaged a team of the NBA pros, and the first game went to the Wildcats.

“We won,” Teague confirmed to KSR on Thursday, adding, “Actually, they had LeBron James playing, KD, all those guys… We were big-time players in his high school, so in our minds, we could compete against anybody. Didn’t really matter to us.”

The second part of that story, and the reason why it’s a KSR favorite, is we heard at the time that, after the young Wildcats won the first scrimmage, Teague yelled toward the NBA stars, “This is Kentucky, we don’t give no f****!”

Teague confirmed that part, too.

Doron Lamb confirmed Team No Sleep

Lamb was popular on Twitter while he was the starting shooting guard for the best college basketball team in the country. Twitter was new then, and everyone was still finding their Twitter identities. Lamb often used his platform to let his followers know when he was eating, watching Martin, or messing with his cousin, Richie P, who he mentioned on Thursday’s show. Lamb tweeted at all hours of the night, thus his creation of #TeamNoSleep.

“I was real big on Team No Sleep,” Lamb told KSR on Thursday. “And if you sleep around me, I’ll wet you, put lotion on your face; that was my thing… I take little naps here and there but I’ll be up all night.”

Beyond his social media presence and late-night antics, Lamb had a very successful two seasons as a Wildcat, two of the best years of his life.

“I had a great experience. Two Final Fours, national champion, SEC champion, 1,000-point scorer. So I had a great two years here.”
