If you listen to Kentucky Sports Radio in the Louisville area on Sports Talk 790, there’s a chance you’ll turn on your car in the afternoon and hear the voice of Doug Gottlieb. He frequently fills in for Colin Cowherd. That’s nothing new. He’s been doing that for years. This year, he added another job: college basketball head coach.

Green Bay hired Doug Gottlieb to lead its program for the 2024-25 season. It was an out-of-the-box hire, but not too unusual. J.J. Redick ditched his media career to coach the Lakers right around the same time. There was one big difference. Redick quit podcasting. Gottlieb stayed on the air.

Green Bay was willing to accommodate, even if it meant its head coach had little to no wiggle room in his schedule. Here’s a snapshot of what that looked like on a game day for the Phoenix:

  • 7:00am — Wake up
  • 7:30am — Coffee with staff
  • 8:00am — Work out
  • 9:00am — Breakfast
  • 10:00am — Shootaround
  • 12:00pm — Arrive back to hotel
  • 2:00pm — Taped podcast
  • 3:00pm — Live on ‘The Doug Gottlieb Show’
  • 5:00pm — Off-Air
  • 7:00pm — Tip-off

If you wondered, “How is that going to work?” The answer is it didn’t.

Gottlieb’s first season as the Green Bay head coach ended with an opening round loss to Oakland in the Horizon League Tournament. The Phoenix went 4-28.

On November 19, Green Bay defeated SIUE 82-57, who won the OVC Title last week to become an NCAA Tournament team, to improve to 2-3. They did not win another game until Feb. 16. The Phoenix lost 21 straight games before finally securing a win over Wright State in conference play. They picked up one more in the final week of the regular season, taking down Detroit Mercy 76-71.

Doug Gottlieb coached one of the worst teams in all of college basketball. They finished the season ranked No. 334 in KenPom out of 364 teams in Division I basketball.

For many NCAA Tournaments, the former Oklahoma State point guard was one of the primary panelists on television for CBS Sports. He also held a similar position on radio for Westwood One. That’s the closest he’ll get to the NCAA Tournament. Gottlieb should probably just stick to radio.
