Down Goes Gonzaga! Feast Week Continues to Deliver Upsets
Feast Week is not for the faint of heart. College basketball’s best are being upset all across the Western Hemisphere and Gonzaga was the latest victim of the November Madness.
Undefeated and ranked No. 3, Gonzaga was the favorite to win the Battle 4 Atlantis and 14.5-point favorites over West Virginia. Somebody forgot to tell the Mountaineers.
Gonzaga led by eight at halftime and got that margin up to double-digits in the second half, but West Virginia was undeterred. Led by the DeVries duo, they delivered one counterpunch after another until they knocked out the Bulldogs 86-78 in overtime.
Darian DeVries was coaching his son Tucker at Drake a year ago. The two made the move to Morgantown and it’s paying immediate dividends. Trailing by 5 points with less than 30 seconds to play, Tucker DeVries hit a three-pointer, stole the ball from the Bulldogs, and then buried two free throws with just a few seconds on the clock to force overtime.
West Virginia blitzed Gonzaga in overtime. They never trailed in the extra period, outscoring Gonzaga 15-7 to secure the program’s biggest win of the post-Bob Huggins era.

DeVries had 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Oklahoma State transfer Javon Small led all scorers with 31 points. The Zags shot 40% from the field and turned the ball over 13 times in the loss.
This upset comes the day after second-ranked UConn suffered its second consecutive loss in the Maui Invitational. Kansas took down Duke on Tuesday night. In the early game of the Battle 4 Atlantis, unranked Louisville smoked No. 14 Indiana. The Cards will face West Virginia in the tournament’s semifinal game tomorrow at noon on ESPN.
This edition of Feast Week is letting college basketball fans feast on upsets and it is a joy to watch.
REMINDER: Kentucky travels to Seattle to play Gonzaga on Saturday, Dec. 7.
