FIBA rules to know for Kentucky's games in the GLOBL Jam

Kentucky tips off its run in the GLOBL Jam this afternoon. Because this is a FIBA (International Basketball Federation) event, there are different rules than those you’re used to in NCAA Basketball. Kentucky play-by-play announcer Tom Leach shared some on Twitter this morning as he prepares for today’s broadcast. As we count down to the tipoff of Kentucky vs. Team Germany, let’s review them.
Rule | FIBA | NCAA |
Playing time | 4×10 minute quarters 5-minute overtime 15-minute halftime | 2×20 minute halves 5-minute overtime 15-minute halftime |
Shot clock | 24 seconds After offensive rebound: 14 seconds | 30 seconds After offensive rebound: 20 seconds |
Court length | 91-10 x 49-2.5 | 94 feet x 50 feet |
Size of lane | 16 feet x 19 feet | 12 feet x 19 feet |
Ball Size | Max circumference 29 inches Max weight 20 ounces / minimum weight 17.99 oz. | Max circumference of 30 inches / minimum circumference 29.5 Max weight 20 ounces / minimum weight 17.99 oz. |
3-point line | 22-1.75 | 20-9 |
Timeouts | Only coaches can call | Coaches and players can call |
Bonus Free Throws | 2 FTs after 5 fouls (no 1+1) | On seventh foul of half (1-and-1); 10th foul (2 FTAs) |
Goaltending/basket interference | No blocking a ball in downward flight towards the rim. Once the ball strikes the rim, any player can play the ball (i.e. swat it away or tap it in) | No blocking a ball in downward flight towards the rim. An imaginary cylinder exists that has the basket as its base. Touching the ball while any part of it is in this cylinder (and still has a chance to go in) is a violation. |
Leach notes that in FIBA, when the ball is inbounded in the frontcourt, you cannot throw it into the backcourt. Also, there is an emphasis on intentional fouls, especially in close games, with the penalty being two free throws and possession of the ball.
If you’d rather see the significant rule changes in Leach’s tidy scrawl, check it out below, along with his very impressive phonetic spelling for Team Germany’s roster.
