On Sunday afternoon Owensboro outlasted Owensboro Catholic 61-56, claiming the school’s first Region 3 title since 1992. It also finalized the bracket for this year’s KHSAA Girls’ Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena.
In a cruel twist, the state’s top two teams will face off in the first round. Sacred Heart ended George Rogers Clark’s season in the Sweet 16 semifinals a year ago, and the Valkyries were victorious 61-49 in a rematch last month. Led by the sensational ZaKiyah Johnson, Sacred Heart is seeking to break its own state record by winning a fourth straight Sweet 16. Current UK women’s basketball assistant coach Crystal Kelly led the Valkyries to three straight from 2002-04.
This will be the fifth year that Rupp Arena has played host to the KHSAA Girls’ Sweet 16. Full books and single session tickets are on sale now.
