Kentucky had some big needs to fill at offensive tackle this offseason. Once again, this program is going to the transfer portal to find answers on the offensive line. The Wildcats quickly targeted and landed their starting right tackle in 2025.

The Wildcats hosted Bowling Green transfer Alex Wollschlaeger for an official visit in December and that turned into a commitment and signature. The All-MAC performer became the fourth player to join Kentucky’s transfer portal class.

Now it’s time to see what the Chicagoland native will bring to the Kentucky offense as all of the free agent pieces are coming together for the Wildcats. KSR’s Film Room is taking a closer look at the plug-and-play starter.

Big, downhill offensive tackle

The first thing that stands out on tape of Alex Wollschlaeger is his size. This is a big, tall, and wide offensive tackle. That allows him to swallow up defenders and makes it difficult for players to get around him in isolation. In games against Texas A&M and Penn State last season, you see grip strength and power from Kentucky’s new right tackle.

You also see the ability to climb to the second level, make blocks in space in the screen game, and just be difficult get around in pass rush situations.

Alex Wollschlaeger plays through the whistle and finishes blocks. When the right tackle plays with the correct balance and a good base, defenders are typically stoned by the offensive tackle as the MAC transfer shows of quality play strength and adequate movement skills.

Alex Wollschlaeger is tough to deal with if he wins early

Alex Wollschlaeger shows grip strength, torque, and finishing power in gap scheme runs. The right tackle generates movement on double teams and finds work at the second level. If he wins early in either the run or the pass game, the individual battle is almost over.

Where there is trouble is if the defender beats him to the spot. Defensive ends did get under Wollschalaeger’s pads when his initial strike misses and that caused some issues. Many time those issues included getting off balance in his pass set. Dealing with true speed rushers in obvious down-and-distance situations could cause some problems but there are a lot of pros in his player profile.

Kentucky’s projected RT1 shows good football IQ on tape, passes off stunts well, and smothers a lot of inside or counter moves. Wollschlaeger should provide Kentucky an upgrade in the downhill run game. Working with right guard Jalen Farmer on double teams could be very intriguing.

The power, intelligence, and high motor combination should give offensive line coach Eric Wolford and offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan a dependable right tackle who can thrive in a gap scheme run game and prevent quick pass rush wins consistent as long as Wollschlaeger plays with balance.
