First Down Kentucky: Gavin Wimsatt Shakes Up a Sleepy Month
The month of May is one of the few times of the year when folks around the Kentucky football program can catch their breath. Following commencement ceremonies last weekend, the players have the month to go home and spend some time with their families before returning for a strenuous summer of training.
The players get a break, but the coaching staff still has some work to do. On Monday the Wildcats hosted transfer quarterback Gavin Wimsatt for an official visit and 24 hours later he’s officially a part of the Kentucky football team.
“We are excited to add Gavin to our program,” Mark Stoops said in a statement. “Game experience is extremely valuable at quarterback and this is a unique opportunity to add talent and experience to the room.”
This will not be Wimsatt’s first college football Saturday in Lexington, Kentucky.
Wimsatt might not be the only addition this month. Some in the transfer portal are still shopping for schools. We are also in the middle of a contact recruiting period through May 25. That means prospects can visit college campuses and coaches can hit the road to cultivate relationships. Chris Collins was spotted at a high school in Alabama this week. One of the new names receiving attention from the Kentucky coaches is an unusual one.
Kentucky Offers “FatRat”
Davion Brown deserves discussion for his play on the field. The 2026 talent from Richmond, Virginia is already considered a top-10 wide receiver in his class as the No. 58 overall prospect in the country. The scholarship offer he received from Brad White is eye-opening all by itself, but I have questions.
How does one get the nickname “FatRat”? Aren’t FatRats slow? If so, how does a talented receiver get that nickname? I need to know more about how an enlarged pest has become synonymous with one of the best wide receivers in the high school ranks.
Tovani Mizell Cleared to Return to Football
A future Wildcat is getting healthy just in time to join the Kentucky football team. Tovani Mizell, a three-star running back from Ft. Lauderdale, suffered an ACL and meniscus tear eight months ago, about a month after he committed to Kentucky. He frequently shared videos on social media of his strenuous rehab and all of that work has paid off. Today he announced he has been officially cleared to return to football activities.

Kentucky Does NOT have an Easy Schedule
The Athletic released a post-spring Top 25 and the Wildcats will host No. 2 Georgia before traveling to No. 4 Texas and No. 6 Ole Miss. No matter how you cut it, that’s a tough schedule. The folks at College Football Network created a strength of schedule metric that plugs in a bunch of different factors to grade every team’s 2024 opponents. After crunching the numbers, Kentucky is tied with South Carolina for the 16th-most difficult schedule in college football next fall. SEC football is not for the faint of heart.
Cutter Boley’s Pickle Juice
Last week at the ballpark I saw a kid pick up what looked like a Jello shooter and take a shot. When his Dad noticed the look on my face, he provided some reassurance, “Yeah, that’s frozen pickle juice.”
Kids are staying hydrated by slurping pickle juice, something that would have disgusted me as a child but sounds delightful as an adult. That’s why I may have to try the new product QB Cutter Boley is endorsing, Suckerpunch.
Speaking of pickles, yesterday a new structure was constructed in the Roush backyard to grow cucumbers. Homemade pickles are filling up mason jars this summer and it’s going to be thrilling.
