Spring practice kicked off this week inside Nutter Field House. Photos and videos were shared from the first few sessions, leaving many Kentucky football fans asking, “Who’s that guy?”

This is an experienced, veteran roster, but Mark Stoops brought in plenty of new guys. We now know what jersey numbers those new guys will be wearing this fall. (Although, it’s not totally set in stone. There are always a couple of guys that switch numbers before fall camp, and there will be a whole new group of freshmen and transfers that arrive in June.)

One that immediately pops off the Kentucky football roster page is Pop. Jamon Dumas-Johnson will be wearing No. 2 in the middle of the Kentucky defense. DeAndre Square wore a single-digit, but it’s a rare sight to see among inside linebackers.

Spring Roster Takeaways

— Pop’s number isn’t the only thing that pops off the page. Dumas-Johnson is listed at 6-1, 260 pounds. That’s another enormous human in the middle of the Kentucky defense.

— Speaking of heavy loads, all of those extra lifts and big breakfasts are paying off for Brian Robinson. The freshman arrives at 6-5, 257 pounds. Ranked as an EDGE, he’ll begin his Kentucky career on the defensive line.

— The big guys aren’t only on the defensive side of the line of scrimmage. Gerald Mincey clocks in at 6-6, 338 pounds. That’s an SEC offensive tackle.

— Cutter Boley is rocking No. 8, one you rarely see from Kentucky quarterbacks. However, there are a few impressive NFL passers who wore that number: Steve Young, Lamar Jackson, and Kirk Cousins, to name a few.

— Steven Soles was incredibly productive at the high school level, but the proficient pass-rusher was overlooked by some programs for his size. He’s starting his career at 214 pounds. The outside linebacker needs to add about 15 pounds of muscle to that frame during his freshman campaign.
