First Down Kentucky: Week 1 Technical Difficulties

“It’s week one for everybody.” It’s a saying we’ve been forced to use often this week at Kentucky Sports Radio. We’ve been doing this for a long, long time, and yet there’s something about the build-up to that first game when everything decides to fall apart all at once.

It started on Monday when we decided to slightly shift our strategy for the KSR Football Podcast. It should have been no problem. There were about 11 of them. Those issues followed Drew Franklin to Thursday morning’s radio show.

Kentucky Sports Radio has never been immune to connection issues. This was not your run-of-the-mill connection issue. KSR was down to its third-string quarterback but had secured an interview with Deone Walker. Drew was just getting started (bro) when the conversation was completely derailed by a technical difficulty unlike anything the show had ever experienced.

As someone who’s been in his shoes before, I can’t accurately describe the kind of stress that overwhelms you when it hits the fan, but boy, does it suck. It should not shock you that Drew kept his cool and still found a way to deliver the interview to Big Blue Nation, even if the echo in his ear threw him off enough to say the phrase “Mark Poop.”

Oh, and that wasn’t all. Right in the middle of an ad read in Pigskin Preview, my computer got so hot that it decided to turn the camera off and shut it completely down. Five minutes later, I found myself sharing picks while sitting criss-cross applesauce on the floor of my kid’s bedroom. Man, that was something.

It’s week one for everybody. We’re getting all of the bad shots up now so that it’s smooth sailing once the games begin. Fingers crossed.

Encouraging Kentucky Football Stat

For many across Big Blue Nation, the Kentucky offensive line is the biggest question mark. What if I told you that this is one of the most experienced offensive lines in all of college football?

There are 143 combined career starts on the Kentucky offensive line, the second most in the SEC. It ranks ninth in the FBS. Even though guys like Gerald Mincey and Jalen Farmer haven’t played together at Kentucky, they’ve played a lot of football and it should pay dividends this fall.

Kentucky Football Player Series Posters are Back

For the second straight year, the schedule poster is getting supplemented with posters featuring your favorite Wildcats. You can pick them up ahead of kickoff near the Cat Walk in “Chevy Park.” Throughout last season there were also plenty dispersed throughout the concourses. You’ll find the offensive playmakers up first, with the rest of the posters shared during the Ohio and Murray State games.

Week 1 College Football Picks

We shared our selections on Pigskin Preview. If you prefer selections from computers, Bill Connelly has you covered. Before treating these as Gospel, be mindful that power ratings perform better when they have more data entered into the equation. It usually takes about three weeks for SP+ to really get rolling. Nevertheless, I love scrolling through this spreadsheet.

Brad White Shares His Story

Brad White arrived in Lexington in 2018 and has been calling the Kentucky defense for the last five seasons. Even though it feels like we know the guy, did you know that he started his career as a walk-on with an academic scholarship at Georgia who eventually transferred to Wake Forest and guided the Demon Deacons to the Orange Bowl? Once his playing days were done, he planned on being an accountant. The funny thing about plans, they have a way of changing.
