For You Kentucky Boys...

by:Dustin Rumbaugh05/26/10
I'm not going to get onto too much of a soapbox here because I certainly can understand both sides, but I don't always agree with the "he's a Kentucky boy, get him a scholarship" crowd. Now, as a Kentucky boy myself, I certainly love to see another Kentucky boy get his shot at a dream and if the scholarship is available and going unused, we should most definitely give it to a Kentucky boy who needs one. When you have two kids of exactly the same talent and fits the same needs and one is from Kentucky while the other is from...say...Indiana, give the Kentucky kid the shot. You might say the same for a Lexington kid versus a Louisville kid but as a kid plunked smack dab in the middle of DA Ville (aka The Best College Sports City in Town) myself, I'd like to tell you we might deserve that scholarship a bit more. Anyways, the rest of the story goes like this: Give the scholarship to the most talented kid available if your main desire is to win, which UK's certainly is. That said, the talent level in Kentucky hasn't exactly matched that of other states but 2011 might be a bit different. Here's a couple kids to keep your eye on: Chane Behanan (#16 PF/4 star by Scout.com)- The name should be familiar to you by now. He was a former UC commit who moved to Bowling Green last season after decommitting from the Bearcats. Since then he has earned all kinds of praise up to and including his recent performance at the Kentucky State AAU's. UK has been interested for awhile but the offer isn't there yet. Depending on how many scholarships the Cats have available for next season, he could certainly find himself on that offer list. Tony Kimbro Jr. (#33 SG/ 3 star by Scout.com)- This name may also be familiar as a "blast from the past" either because you're old enough to remember Sr. or because you remember when Jr. played in Louisville. After moving to NC and getting a couple of championships, Kimbro is headed back to Louisville and will join up with what should be an extremely talented J-town team. He already made a little noise this past weekend with a good showing at the AAU's as well. Some services have Kimbro ranked a little higher, including Hoop Scoop which slots him in as the 52nd best player overall. Kentucky has shown interest and other high D-1 programs have offered. Kimbro's college fate is in his own hands and his senior season will tell all about how highly he is ultimately recruited.
