Former Kentucky CB Chris Westry Waived by Carolina Panthers
Chris Westry is looking for a new NFL home. The former Kentucky cornerback was waived by the Carolina Panthers in their first round of cuts following the preseason opener.
Westry did not perform particularly well in his first and only game for the Panthers. According to PFF, he was targeted three times. Washington wide receivers recorded a reception on each target to Westry for a total of 39 yards, moving the sticks after every completion.
It wasn’t all bad for former Kentucky Wildcats in the 23-21 win over the Commanders. The Big Snacc, Phil Hoskins, got a big sack to open up his second season in Charlotte.
Despite being waived, Chris Westry has staying power in the NFL. After cutting his teeth for a few years in-between the Dallas Cowboys’ active roster and practice squad, he broke through in 2021, playing in six games and starting in two for the Baltimore Ravens. He tallied 17 tackles, one for loss and three pass deflections. As injuries pile up elsewhere, Westry’s number could be called back into action for another team.

Lynn Bowden Makes Strong Case
As Zack informed you this morning, AJ Rose and Lynn Bowden also had positive preseason performances. Lynn Bowden’s quality outing came at the perfect time. The Miami Dolphins are reportedly exploring a preseason trade for the former third round pick. Bowden showed prospective teams that he’s still got it after an injury sidelined him for the entire 2021 season.
The former Kentucky All-American caught three passes for 55 yards, including a touchdown on a stop-and-go route. Bowden was PFF’s highest-graded offensive player in the Miami Dolphins’ Saturday night win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also contributed on special teams, giving folks hope that Lynn Bowden may still be able to prove Jon Gruden wrong.
