Former Kentucky Signee Somto Cyril Commits to Georgia

Kentucky fans will get to watch Somto Cyril play next year after all. The former Wildcat signee was released from his National Letter of Intenet following John Calipari’s departure. On Monday he announced a commitment to Georgia.

The 6-foot-10 center spent the last two seasons playing at Overtime Elite in Atlanta. Ranked as the No. 46 overall player in the On3 Industry Ranking, he’s not completely all-in on Mike White’s program. Cyril announced he will also be entering his name into the 2024 NBA Draft.

“These past few weeks have been a whirlwind, and I can now say that it’s over. It is with great pleasure to let you know that I’m committed to the G!” Cyril shared in a message on social media. “On my visit to Athens, Coach White and his staff were very detailed in their approach, and it was a great feeling being in a place that had such a family environment.”

“In full transparency, I will also be putting my name in the 2024 NBA Draft while maintaining my college eligibility,” Cyril added. “I will take this time to get much-needed feedback from NBA teams during the month of May. This will allow not only myself and my family to have the information, but it will also provide my coaching staff with information about me as well going into the 2024-25 season. I am excited about this opportunity and can’t wait to get to work representing the University of Georgia!”

John Calipari had notched commitments from six high school players to Kentucky. Only Travis Perry will stay on with the new regime. Three players — Boogie Fland, Billy Richmond, and Karter Knox, another OTE product — are following Calipari to Arkansas. Jayden Quaintence made the most surprising move so far, spurning Louisville and Memphis to commit to Arizona State.

The addition of Cyril gives Mike White a significant bump to what’s looking like his best recruiting class to date at Georgia. The Dawgs now have the nation’s ninth-ranked class. The big man from the OTE is the second top 50 player from the high school ranks, joining Asa Newell, a 6-foot-9 power forward ranked as the No. 10 overall player in the 2024 recruiting class.

Georgia traveled to Rupp Arena in January, meaning the Wildcats will probably see Somto next season at Stegeman Coliseum. It will also serve as a homecoming for Mark Fox, the former Georgia head coach who was hired by Mark Pope in a non-recruiting role last week.
