Kentucky wide receivers have struggled to perform consistently for the Cats this fall. When things got sideways in the second half, a true freshman entered the game and rose to the occasion.

A former four-star talent from New Jersey, what Cam Miller lacks in size he makes up for with athleticism and tenacity. That’s what made him such a sought-after recruiting win for the Wildcats. We saw that on display in the fourth quarter at Sanford Stadium.

Miller skied high to catch a pass, then toe-tapped down the sideline. The reception was originally ruled incomplete, then overturned after replay review. A few plays later, the game looked over on fourth and 10. Then Miller struck again, gaining 18 yards with a tough, tough catch.

“He’s got a lot of heart. He cares a lot, and he plays super fast,” said quarterback Cutter Boley. “He’s grinding, always in the facility, always working. I’m really proud of Cam, to be able to come in here today and know what he’s doing and just play his heart out. That’s a dude that ain’t scared of nothing.”

That fearlessness and fight is exactly what Kentucky needs in its wide receiver room. He finished the day with three receptions for 41 yards, the second-most on the team. Even though Mark Stoops was initially hesitant to give the young guys a chance, Miller is forcing the coaches to reconsider.

“We’re gonna have to. He’s a guy that kind of shows up and made a really tough catch there. I believe that was on fourth down,” said Stoops.

“It’s hard. We’re trying to get some continuity. We’re trying to figure out our guys at the wide receiver position that could make some plays for us, and if he keeps on working, we’ll get him some opportunities.”

Miller flashed during preseason practices. When finally given an opportunity in a game setting, he delivered. With a bye week on the horizon, it’s the ideal time to find more ways to get the freshman wide receiver more involved in the Kentucky offense.
