Well, here goes nothing. One year to the day following Kentucky‘s historic upset vs. No. 15 seed St. Peter’s in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, the Wildcats are back on the floor with a chance at redemption. Maybe not against the Peacocks, but an opportunity to get the postseason win monkey off the program’s back in March. And it’ll be against a familiar face and high-profile coach in Bryce Hopkins and Ed Cooley, respectively, with No. 11 seed Providence.
What do you need to know about the Friars? They finished the year 21-11 overall and 13-7 in the Big East, but closed out the regular season with losing eight of their final 15 games, including three straight losses entering the Big Dance. The most notable? An 82-58 loss vs. Seton Hall at home on Senior Day.
Providence ranks No. 16 overall in adjusted offense and No. 108 in adjusted defense on the year, but just No. 26 overall in the former and No. 200 in the latter over its last ten games. The Friars average 78.1 points per contest, shooting 45.9% from the field, 35.1% from three and 74.5% at the line. Their leading scorer, as you know by now, is former Kentucky forward Bryce Hopkins. He’s averaging 16.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per contest. From there, Ed Croswell (13.2), Devin Carter (13.1), Noah Locke (11.1) and Jared Bynum (10.0) all average double figures for Providence, a balanced scoring attack among starters.
Bench help, though, is limited, with just three other players averaging at least 10 minutes per contest, none scoring over five points per game.
Let’s jump into it.
Vegas, Computers
Kentucky (-190) opened as a 3.5-point favorite against Providence (+158), with the line moving to -4.5 in favor of the Wildcats as of Friday morning. The over/under currently sits at 143.5 after opening at 145.5.
Cooley’s squad is 18-14-0 against the spread overall, 4-6-0 in its last 10 and just 1-4-0 in the last five. Calipari’s Wildcats are 15-17-0 overall, but 6-4-0 in the last 10 and 5-2-0 in the last seven.
The computers also favor the Wildcats, as ESPN’s matchup predictor gives Kentucky a 63.8% chance to pull off the win to open the NCAA Tournament. KenPom is projecting a 75-74 win for UK, giving the No. 6 seed a 57% chance to win in Greensboro. Bart Torvik also likes Cats, predicting a 75-72 win (-3.1) with a 62% chance to get the postseason momentum started.

“Providence is well-coached. They’ve got terrific players,” Calipari said. “Obviously, I know Bryce well and respect him and love him to death. He is a terrific player, but their guards are good. They’re downhill runners.”
