Gavin Wimsatt gives Kentucky a chance to play Two Quarterbacks on the field at the Same Time
Following spring practice, it did not take long for Kentucky football fans to learn that new offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan wanted to add a running quarterback from the transfer portal. After watching Brock Vandagriff run the ball well this spring, the question was, why? We now know have an answer.
On Tuesday Kentucky announced the addition of Gavin Wimsatt, a former prep star from Owensboro who spent the last season under center as Rutgers’ starting quarterback. His passing numbers did not pop off the page, but in 2023 he rushed for 4.9 yards per carry and used his legs to score 11 touchdowns.
Wednesday morning Hamdan spoke with Dick Gabriel on The Leach Report and made it clear that Wimsatt’s legs will be put to good use in Lexington.
“He’s a guy that started 19 games in Power Five football, 6-3, 225-pound prospect who we think athletically is a great addition for this football team,” said Hamdan.
“Certainly in this conference, and how unforgiving the SEC is, anytime you can add someone with that experience who can certainly, right off the bat in situational football, from a quarterback run standpoint can be utilized. It’s a weapon we’re excited about.”

Hamdan needed a third scholarship quarterback on his roster. It was not that long ago that Kentucky needed to move a wide receiver to the position to start the entire second half of the season. The Wildcats’ new offensive coordinator believes Wimsatt can do much more than serve as a backup to Brock Vandagriff.
“This gives us the opportunity to take some hits off Brock and be creative, have both of them on the field at the same time. Certainly, it’s something we thought a lot about and we think there can be some added value to take some hits off of him.”
Hamdan is no stranger to playing with multiple quarterbacks. Last year at Boise State Taylen Green and Maddux Madsen each logged significant snaps for the Broncos. Vandagriff will have the keys to Hamdan’s offense, but Wimsatt adds a new wrinkle to the equation for Hamdan.
“We all know there’s going to be the starting quarterback. He’s got to get in that kind of rhythm, but we are certainly at least in the building excited about the creativity this prospect can bring us and excited to utilize them.”
