Georgia Amoore earns National, SEC Player of the Week honors
Head coach Kenny Brooks couldn’t have asked for a better start to SEC play. Neither could star point guard Georgia Amoore.
Thanks to excellent showings last week in a pair of wins for Kentucky women’s basketball, Amoore hauled in a couple of high-profile awards on Tuesday. The fifth-year All-American was named both the National and SEC Player of the Week. Amoore, who has scored at least 20 points in six straight contests, averaged 25.5 points and nine assists in 37 minutes per outing in blowout wins over Mississippi State and Vanderbilt — two projected NCAA Tournament teams.
The 5-foot-6 native of Australia shot 47.2 percent from the field, 10-20 (50 percent) from deep, and 7-7 from the free throw line during those two wins for the Wildcats. She is one of five players named a National Player of the Week by the USBWA.
After an incredible four-year career at Virginia Tech under Brooks, Amoore and her college head coach made the move to Lexington when Brooks was hired during the offseason. Large expectations were placed on Amoore’s shoulders as the person to bridge the gap between this new era of Kentucky women’s hoops. She’s lived up to every single one of them so far.

“She was already a star,” Brooks said during his Tuesday press conference. “Coming into this year, her role was very different. Her role is that she is the focal point. She’s really stepped it up with her leadership ability.”
Starting all 14 games played for the ‘Cats this season, Amoore is averaging 17.9 points, a career-high 7.4 assists, and one steal in 35.3 minutes per outing. She struggled to shoot the ball early on but has quickly gotten herself up to speed. She’s even shooting a career-high 41.4 percent from the field and is up to 34.6 percent from deep.
With Amoore leading the charge, Kentucky is off to a terrific start to the 2024-25 season. The Wildcats sit on a 13-1 record (2-0 SEC) with a No. 15 ranking in the latest AP Poll. Up next for UK is a road matchup on Thursday against Florida.
