Good Cheer wins 151st running of the Kentucky Oaks

For the third time, a Brad Cox-trained horse has won the Kentucky Oaks.
On a muddy Friday afternoon at Churchill Downs, Good Cheer won the 151st running of the Kentucky Oaks by multiple lengths. Good Cheer and her jockey, Luis Saez, entered the race as the clear favorite (7-5 odds). She is now a perfect 7-7 in her racing career. After a brief delay due to weather, the filly ran the 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.15 for the $1.5 million purse.
“She’s awesome man. She’s just so classy to deal with,” Cox said on the NBC broadcast following the race. “I’ve said it for months. She’s so good, 7-for-7. She’s a perfect cheer, she’s awesome.”
Drexel Hill (32-1) came in second, while Bless the Broken (17-1) finished third in the 13-horse field. And as expected, KSR’s favorite horse, Simply Joking, came in dead last — the curse lives on. Cox, a native of Louisville, has also trained Oaks winners Monomoy Girl (2018) and Shedaresthedevil (2020).
