Historical horse racing machine venue coming to downtown Louisville
Do you like slot machines — err, I mean, historical horse racing machines? You’re in luck because Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI) just announced plans to open a new historical racing machine entertainment venue in downtown Louisville. So, basically, a slot machine casino.
Derby City Gaming Downtown, a 43,000 square-foot space, will be located at 140 South 4th Street at the corner of South 4th and West Market. The venue will include 500 historical racing machines, a fresh-air gaming area, and 200 onsite parking spaces. There will be three bars: a main-level sports bar, a bourbon library, and a wine and charcuterie lounge. Construction will begin later this year with an estimated opening date in early 2023.
The project will create 350 construction jobs and more than 100 permanent positions. CDI will also donate $1 million to the West End Opportunity Partnership to help create more jobs in West Louisville.
This will be Churchill Downs’ second historical racing machine venue in Louisville. Derby City Gaming, located at 4520 Poplar Level Road, opened in 2018. This summer, CDI announced a $76 million expansion to Derby City Gaming to add a hotel, restaurant, and other amenities.

How is a historical horse racing machine different than a slot machine?
It’s not, really. Technically, historical horse racing machines base results on previously-run horse races whereas slot machine results are randomized, but if you sit down in front of one, I doubt you could tell the difference.
Historical horse racing machines are meh, but if the folks in Frankfort get their act together and finally legalize sports betting, this news will be very exciting.
