Iowa sharpshooter CJ Fredrick is entering the transfer portal.

After rumors of a potential departure began swirling to close out the 2020-21 season, that speculation was confirmed late Sunday evening when the former Covington Catholic standout officially left the Iowa program and entered the portal.

Rob Howe of HawkeyeNation.com was the first to break the news on Sunday, followed by Chad Leistikow of HawkCentral.com confirming the departure shortly after.

Fredrick, the 2018 Kentucky Gatorade Player of the Year, started 27 games for Iowa this past season and finished the year averaging 7.5 points per game on 47.4% shooting overall and 47.4% shooting from three. As a freshman in 2019-20, the 6-foot-1 guard averaged 10.2 points per contest and shot 46.1% from three on over four attempts per game.

Though Fredrick is just now entering the portal, rumors of the former Covington Catholic standout returning closer to home – he’s originally from Cincinnati, OH – have been loud and clear since February, with Kentucky seen as the longtime favorite should a transfer come to fruition.

Now that Fredrick is officially entering the portal, fans should keep a close eye on this one. Desperately needing shooting help this past season, plenty could be on the way in 2021-22 with the potential addition of Fredrick, the signing of Davidson sharpshooter Kellan Grady, and the return of in-state standout Dontaie Allen.
