Liam Coen Discusses Kentucky's Upset Win Over Louisville

As his final spring practice opened, Will Levis talked about the moment he learned Liam Coen was leaving Lexington. He had just finished a workout and was chatting with Mark Stoops when the Kentucky head coach’s phone rang. They both knew what was happening next.

Coen got an opportunity he could not turn down. He might get another one.

Levis was one of many Kentucky offensive players who painfully accepted the harsh reality that their play-caller would not run it back for one more year with a talented group of seniors. Now Levis has a potential chance for a do-over.

The second round draft pick of the Tennessee Titans has a new coach, Brian Callahan. Multiple reports say the Titans are working to finalize a deal with the former Bengals offensive coordinator. Callahan has spent the last four seasons helping Zac Taylor revitalize the franchise with Joe Burrow under center.

I know what you’re probably thinking right now. “Hey, I remember that Coen used to work with Taylor in L.A. Aren’t they still close?” Yes, that is correct, but that does not mean Taylor wants Coen to be his offensive coordinator. A succession plan is already in place in Cincinnati to promote quarterback coach Dan Pitcher.

There is not a direct connection between Coen and the Titans head coach. However, Callahan’s old boss and his new quarterback would give their stamp of approval. Oh, and Sean McVay is a believer in the Kentucky play-caller as well.

Let me be clear: Just because there are connections, does not mean this will in fact happen. No sources are telling me that Levis is working back channels to bring his boy to Nashville. This is purely conjecture, a game of coaching connect the dots.

One piece of the equation that is significant and has not been mentioned yet: there’s a 90% chance Callahan wants to call plays as the Titans head coach. In all of the previous coaching vacancies Coen was attached to there was an opportunity for Liam to call the plays. The last time he was in the NFL, he acted as a non-play-calling offensive. He loved it so much that he returned to Kentucky after one season.

It’s unclear if anything will come of this move by the Tennessee Titans. But Coen has not exactly been bashful this offseason about his NFL aspirations and the Will Levis factor is unavoidable. We’ll be monitoring this coaching search closely once Callahan is officially introduced as the next head coach of the Tennessee Titans.
