Fumble!!!!!!

It’s a beautiful sound in the Governor’s Cup, and Louisville did it twice in the second half, paying homage to past Louisville teams that also blew the rivalry game as a home favorite. Lamar must be so, so proud.

Governor’s Cup MVP JJ Weaver, a Louisville native, forced and recovered UofL’s first fumble. Then he scooped up the second only five minutes later.

The latter came in the fourth quarter, moments after Kentucky tied up the game with a field goal off the first fumble. D’Eryk Jackson stripped Jack Plummer, and Weaver fell on it at the Louisville 22.

Kentucky took its first lead two plays later.

It felt like 2016 all over again, watching those overconfident dirty Birds fumble away a game to Kentucky. Big Blue Nation chased that Louisville fumble high for seven years until the Governor’s Cup again gifted us with that intoxicating feeling in 2023. Twice.

There was almost another fumble on Louisville’s first drive of the game when Jawhar Jordan lost control of the ball at the one-yard line. A close call, it went to the booth, and Jordan was saved by a decision.

But Louisville wasn’t saved from itself in the end.

The Cards fumbled the Cup and a one-loss season.

10 and TWO – Not Top 10

Louisville didn’t belong in meaningful postseason football, so in some ways, Kentucky saved the sport today. Kentucky also saved Louisville from further embarrassment on a bigger stage. (You’re welcome, Louisville.)

Not all 10-1 records are the same and not all top-10 teams are one of the 10 best teams in the country. Today, we were once again reminded to pay no mind to what Louisville does before the Governor’s Cup. The ACC is a different sport than the SEC. Throw out the records (unless you want to talk about Kentucky being a 10-win team in the ACC).

The only record that matters right now is 5-0 in the last five Governor’s Cups. This game is bigger than others, and Kentucky won it again, in part because Louisville dropped the ball.

‘Tis the season for Fumble!!!!!!!!
