After just one season at Minnesota, Jamal Mashburn Jr. will explore his options in the portal, a move that comes just two days after the firing of head coach Richard Pitino. ESPN's Jeff Borzello was the first to break the news. https://twitter.com/jeffborzello/status/1372240501613678601?s=20 In his first year as a Golden Gopher, Mashburn averaged 8.2 points on 35.0% shooting and 27.6% from three to go with 1.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists per contest in 29 total games. After starting out the gates slow, he did, however, finish the season scoring in double figures in 10 of the team's final 12 games. The best performance of his freshman campaign came in a loss at Indiana when the 6-foot-2 point guard finished with 19 points on 7-16 shooting on Feb. 17. He also added 16 points on 6-14 shooting and 2-3 from three to go with six rebounds and three assists in a loss to No. 5 Illinois on Feb. 20. Coming out of high school, Mashburn was considered a consensus four-star and top-100 prospect after playing two seasons at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire. He originally committed to Minnesota over offers from Auburn, California, Connecticut, Florida, Florida State, Georgetown, Illinois, Miami, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Wake Forest, among others. Despite the long list of scholarships, Kentucky never extended an official offer or expressed serious interest in the son of the former legend, with Mashburn Jr. instead deciding to play for the son of his father's former coach. With Pitino out at Minnesota, though, Mashburn is in search of a new home.
