Mark Pope said Kentucky signee Jasper Johnson was “just danger, danger, danger, danger” when he put pen to paper with the Wildcats last week. It was his first five-star since taking over the program, getting him out of their own backyard in Lexington as a scoring anchor for next season.

Johnson’s very next game at Overtime Elite after making it official with Kentucky to open the early signing period? The top-15 recruit happened to throw down maybe the filthiest dunk you’ll see all year.

The future Wildcat caught the ball in transition coming down the left side of the floor, gathered just inside the 3-point line and went up for the left-handed slam over 6-10 center Mabilmawut Mabil, leading to an absolute explosion from the players, coaches, crowd, announcers and all of social media.

Talk about danger, right?

Johnson finished with 20 points on 7-13 shooting to go with five rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block in a 14-point win for RWE. Through four games at OTE, the Lexington native is averaging 20.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.8 assists in 31.4 minutes per contest.

There’s plenty to love about Johnson, obviously, and Pope made that clear this past week, giddy to talk about the future Wildcat and his anticipated impact in blue and white during his post-signing day press conference.

“He just is a dangerous gravity guy,” Pope said. “He just demands that if you’re not going to pay attention to him with more than one body, anywhere he is on the court probably, he’s gonna hurt you, and he can really, really, really score the ball. And he’s got a kindness about him that’s really special. And he knows Kentucky, right? All one thing that’s great about all three of these guys is they have emotional reaction when they pull on a t-shirt that has Kentucky across the chest, right? They have emotional response.

“Jasper Johnson has a chance to be a really, really special player here in Kentucky, for sure.”

The present is a blast right now in Lexington, but the future is just as bright.
