Jensen Castle, Laney Frye fail to make cut at U.S. Women's Open

Kentucky women’s golfers Jensen Castle and Laney Frye competed in the U.S. Women’s Open this weekend at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina. Unfortunately, both Castle and Frye failed to make Friday’s cut, shorting their stay in the Tar Heel state.
Frye started first in one of the earliest groups on Friday morning. Starting on the ninth hole, she parred her first three. A bogey on the 12th put her at 1-over. She was able to par the 13 and 14, but found trouble again with a bogey on the 15.
A birdie on the 16th softened the blow, but a double bogey on the next hole put Frye at 3-over. She birdied the first hole in her front nine and managed to par the next four holes, but back to back bogies on the 6th and 7th holes put her at 4-over, where she would stay for the day.
Castle had a promising start to her Friday. The defending U.S. Amateur champion recorded pars on the ninth, 10th, 12th and 13th holes. On the 14th hole, she would sink her first birdie of the day, moving her to 2-over for the championship.

Trouble came at the par-3 16th hole, where she carded a double-bogey that put her back at 4-over and outside of the cut. Another bogey at the 18th put her at 5-over par.
The front side needed to be better — and at first it looked good. Castle started with three consecutive pars and hopes to cut into her deficit. However, she bogeyed the par-4 fourth hole and double-bogeyed the sixth to squash any hopes of making the cut. She finished at 5-over par on the day.
The tournament will conclude this afternoon. Australia’s Minjee Lee currently sits in first place at -13 on the weekend.
