At the end of this month, longtime Kentucky Basketball beat writer Jerry Tipton will retire from a 41-year career at the Lexington Herald-Leader. One of the best college basketball beat writers to ever do it, Tipton decided “it’s time” to step away from the grind that is covering the Kentucky Basketball machine, a job he’s held since the 1981-82 season.

With him goes the last yellow legal pad and the most fearless voice in Kentucky Basketball’s press room. And though many in the Big Blue Nation viewed Tipton as too negative or too critical, deep down those fans will miss knowing how many empty seats are in Rupp Arena 15 minutes before each game.

Here at KSR, we salute Tipton’s career with a look back at some of his best exchanges with John Calipari. Enjoy these funny and sometimes contentious conversations over the years.
