Kentucky assistant coach Steve Clinkscale and J.J. Weaver were members of the Kentucky football program from 2019-20. Now the duo will reunite in the National Football League. The multi-year starter in the SEC has agreed to terms with an AFC West franchise.

Weaver will play for head coach Jim Harbaugh, defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, defensive backs coach Steve Clinkscale, and with former Kentucky EDGE Bud Dupree on the Chargers.

The undrafted free agent deal will give J.J. Weaver his shot in the NFL. The Louisville (Ky.) Moore product was a four-star recruit in the 2019 cycle who had a long career in Lexington. Weaver spent six years with the Wildcats and appeared in 58 career game with 39 starting assignments and played 2,446 snaps. The EDGE finished his career with 197 tackles, 39.5 tackles for loss, 21.5 sacks, 69 pressures, eight pass breakups, two interceptions, and five forced fumbles. Weaver ranks fourth in UK history in sacks.

Another former Kentucky player has made the leap to professional football. He will be joining a 3-4 defense that returns starters Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu at outside linebacker. General manager Joe Hortiz spent a fourth-round pick on South Carolina EDGE Kyle Kennard. J.J. Weaver will have to earn a spot in a packed position room.
