Reminder: The episode of the John Calipari docuseries on his return to Kentucky airs tonight

Got plans tonight? If you’re up for a little hate-watching, episode two of “Calipari: Razor’s Edge,” VICE Sports’ docuseries on John Calipari, airs at 10 p.m. ET (VICE TV, ViceTV.com). This episode centers on Calipari’s return to Rupp Arena for Arkansas’ game vs. Kentucky on Feb. 1. I’m sure you remember how that turned out.
I watched a screener of the episode this afternoon. It’s not as painful as I thought it’d be. The director does a good job of capturing Calipari and the former Kentucky players and coaches’ emotions on the trip to Lexington, including some comments from Adou Thiero and Zvonimir Ivisic about playing in Rupp Arena that will tug at your heartstrings. Ellen Calipari even makes an appearance to talk about their time in Lexington, and we get to see Cal make the rounds to visit old friends. Casual viewers will probably end up cheering for him by the end, which is probably the point. As Kentucky fans, we’re used to being the villain.
There’s plenty of footage of Calipari and his staff preparing in the days leading up to the game, during which he makes it clear just how much they needed to win to turn around the season. To the Razorbacks’ credit, they’ve gone 2-2 since then and are back on the NCAA Tournament bubble — although Calipari was pretty upset about their loss to Texas A&M on Saturday. That should be an interesting episode.
The first episode of “Calipari: Razor’s Edge” chronicled Calipari’s decision to leave Kentucky, the early days in Fayetteville, and the first two-thirds of the season. ICYMI, we shared two unaired clips from that episode last week. In the first, Mark Pope talks about his chance meeting with Calipari and Tubby Smith at the Final Four hours before Cal met with Arkansas. In the second, Pope explains Kentucky fans’ conflicted feelings about Calipari’s return. Although losing that game stunk, it’s comforting knowing that Kentucky’s new coach is perfectly in tune with BBN.
Other things you can watch instead
Fortunately, there are several other great shows/movies to watch right now if you’d rather not relive Cal’s return to Rupp. Here are just a few on my list:
SNL’s 50th Anniversary Special (Peacock): Saturday Night Live‘s 50th anniversary special aired last night, and if you missed it, odds are you’ve heard people talking about it today. As Nick Roush wrote earlier, the three-hour primetime event was the perfect mix of comedy, starpower, music, and nostalgia. Do yourself a favor and watch the entire thing instead of just a few YouTube clips. If you really want to go all in, watch the concert from Radio City Music Hall on Friday night, which is also available on Peacock.
The White Lotus, Season Three (HBO, Max): If you weren’t watching SNL 50, odds are you may have been watching the season three premiere of The White Lotus. This season takes place in Thailand and features an all-star cast, including Jason Isaacs, Parker Posey, Leslie Bibb, Walter Goggins, Michelle Monaghan, and Natasha Rothwell, who played Belinda in Season One.

Yellowjackets, Season Three (Showtime): My husband and I started watching Yellowjackets a few years ago and were pleasantly surprised by the dark comedy/thriller, which centers around a high-school girls soccer team that survives a plane crash in the wilderness. Season three came out last week; lots of TV on the docket, but I can’t wait to dive in.
Pitino: Red Storm Rising (VICE TV): VICE is also airing a docuseries on Rick Pitino if you’d like to check in on another former Kentucky coach. The series tracks Pitino’s journey at St. John’s, but the first episode apparently included a lot about his time at Kentucky. It’s available to stream for free on VICETV.com.
Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy (Peacock): In the mood for something lighter? The fourth installment of the Bridget Jones film series, Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, dropped on Peacock last Thursday. Renee Zellweger is back as the lovable Brit, who is now a widowed single mother trying to navigate the dating world. I’m skeptical of sequels, but this was an enjoyable watch on a sleepy Sunday afternoon.
Paradise (Hulu): How about a political thriller in which the President of the United States is a huge Kentucky fan? James Marsden (a close friend of UK celebrity superfan Josh Hopkins) reps the Cats early and often in Hulu’s new series Paradise. I’ve yet to watch it, but Drew Franklin claims it’s pretty good.
