John Calipari explains coaching staff's move back to suits
We’ve covered the main points from Kentucky’s 78-66 win over Vanderbilt, so how about something a little lighter? For the third time in four games, Kentucky’s coaching staff wore suits instead of pullovers and khakis. At the end of his postgame interview with ESPN, John Calipari said his son Brad, a graduate assistant, was behind the move.
“My son bought suits and it’s always been, every game, ‘Are we wearing suits?’ So, I finally — and again, you guys have got to understand, I sleep with that kid’s mom. You know that. He’s been all over me about wearing suits and I’m sweating. I hate it. I’ll go back and change as soon as I go in the back.”
Kentucky’s staff first switched to casual wear last season and continued the trend until the High Point game, when they donned suits for Tubby Smith’s jersey retirement ceremony. After returning to pullovers at LSU, they broke the suits out again vs. Georgia. Prior to tip vs. the Bulldogs, John Calipari presented Davion Mintz with a ceremonial ball in honor of his 1,000th career point. Last night marked the first time the staff wore suits on the road. With Jerry Stackhouse, the league’s sharpest dresser, on the opposing sideline, it was a welcome sight.
While Brad may be behind the move, another member of the staff is undoubtedly happy about the development. Chin Coleman, a famously snazzy dresser, told John Clay last week that he was thrilled to finally wear a suit vs. High Point.

“I was able to sprinkle a little bit of my style sense into that game and it was light. I went light but yet, still I was able to sprinkle a little in and I was very happy about that because I was able to put some clothes on twice in one day, at the game and for dinner on New Year’s Eve. So that day was a very happy day for me.”
Chin sprinkled a little more of his style into last night’s outfit:
Who cares what the coaches wear? Well, the Cats are 3-0 in games they’ve worn suits and 10-3 in games they haven’t, so let’s hope this new trend sticks. Finally, you know Ellen Calipari didn’t let Cal’s old joke about sharing a bed go unnoticed:
