John Calipari shares the latest on TyTy Washington, Sahvir Wheeler injuries
Kentucky found a way to win without TyTy Washington and Sahvir Wheeler against Alabama. They may have to do it again Wednesday night against LSU.
Monday night the Kentucky head coach was asked about the status of his starting guards on The John Calipari Show.
“They didn’t practice today. They’re day-to-day,” said Calipari. “Will they play in Wednesday’s game? I don’t know yet. They may not, and if they don’t, we go and (it’s) next man up.”
In the second segment Calipari added, “We’re going to be short-handed, I think. These two are day-to-day, so maybe one or both of them will be able to come back and practice tomorrow, be ready for Wednesday.”
Washington has been banged up a few times this season. The Wildcats’ second-leading scorer was rolled up on nine days ago against Florida. The injury looked gruesome, but TyTy returned to play on Tuesday at Tennessee. He did not look quite like himself and was eventually forced to the sideline in the second half, with Calipari expressing remorse after the game for letting Washington play through the pain.

Unlike Washington, Wheeler was able to finish the game against Tennessee. The SEC assist leader injured his wrist against the Volunteers. After the Alabama win, Coach Cal sounded ready to let each player remain on the sideline for the foreseeable future.
“They may be out another couple of games. I need them healthy before March. We don’t need them to play hurt. If we don’t win a game because they’re not there, then we don’t win the game.”
“They’re both injured,” he added later. “It’s another one of those — we just don’t need nagging [injuries]. So if they’ve got to take another week off, take another week off.”
Their injuries did not prevent either from being outstanding teammates on the sideline. What a vibe.
