One of Kentucky's Unforgettables is returning to the head coaching ranks. After spending the last three years as Avery Johnson's associate head coach at Alabama, Tennessee Tech has hired John Pelphrey to be its next head basketball coach. "It's an honor and privilege to be at Tennessee Tech," Pelphrey said in a statement. "My family and I, and our staff, were looking for a place where we could go and learn, lead and take on challenges in college basketball. We're very appreciative of Mark Wilson and his pursuit of us. We have complete confidence and trust in him. We love the alignment between him and President Oldham and their vision for basketball at Tennessee Tech moving into the future, and we are very, very excited to be a part of that." Pelphrey takes over a program that finished 8-23 in 2019, dead last in the Ohio Valley with a 4-14 conference record. It's Pelphrey's third head coaching job. He previously served at South Alabama and Arkansas between 2002-11. Pelphrey also had two stints as an assistant at Florida. Named Mr. Basketball in the state of Kentucky in 1987, the Paintsville High School product's jersey hangs in the rafters of Rupp Arena. It may not happen next year, but I have a feeling Tennessee Tech will be on Kentucky's home schedule very soon. [mobile_ad]
