Earlier this week, KSR’s Nick Roush warned you to keep an eye on Jon Sumrall as a candidate for the head coaching job at Troy University. It appears he was correct because today one of the most trusted sources in the coaching carousel, FootballScoop.com, named Sumrall one of four finalists for the Troy job.

Kentucky’s inside linebackers coach/co-defensive coordinator is on a short list of potential hires along with Alabama assistant Charles Kelly, West Virginia assistant Jordan Lesley, and one other unnamed candidate.

All four were scheduled to meet with Troy officials on Thursday, says the report.

Here’s what FootballScoop.com had to say about Sumrall in its football scoop:

In football circles, Sumrall is heralded as one of the sport’s rising stars. Kentucky’s co-defensive coordinator, Sumrall already boasts deep ties to Troy – he was the program’s assistant head coach, special teams coordinator, linebackers coach and helped the Trojans to a trio of bowl appearances during his four-season term from 2015-18.

Sumrall, a Huntsville, Alabama, native, this season has helped implement a Wildcats’ defense that has fueled that program to the cusp of another New Year’s Day bowl game and possible 10-win season.

Even if offered the position, Sumrall could choose to remain in Lexington where he is very well compensated for his work with the defense and on the recruiting trail. As Roush noted, Sumrall is due for a raise on his $675,00/year salary and Stoops takes care of his guys. He has a very talented linebacker group to coach next season too.

It’s just something to watch for in the days to come as Troy hurries its search for a coach with Sumrall’s name in the mix.
