Jon Sumrall seemingly responds to Vince Marrow's move from Kentucky to Louisville

Is it a shot at Vince Marrow? Mark Stoops? The Kentucky football program? Getting out in front of job speculation after an entire offseason of it before ultimately returning to Tulane? One thing is for certain: Jon Sumrall‘s latest tweet is no coincidence.

Minutes after the Big Dawg traded in the blue for red — and all respect from BBN — Kentucky’s former co-defensive coordinator under Stoops and the three-year letter-winner at MLB at UK from 2002-04 shared a simple message on social media both to his Green Wave fans and the entire college football world as they wait for his next inevitable move. Maybe the hottest name in coaching after leading Troy to a 23-4 record from 2022-23 and a nine-win campaign in his debut season at Tulane in 2024, he turned down multiple Big 12 schools and North Carolina — who later hired Bill Belichick — to return to New Orleans.

At the time, many saw it as Sumrall passing on this wave (no pun intended) of offers to hold out for the next coaching cycle. That includes Kentucky’s situation with Mark Stoops — which is unstable, to say the least. If not Lexington, odds are good another SEC job will open up as he continues to build his head coaching resume in the AAC.

Until then, Sumrall is watching it all unfold with the popcorn popping.

“#RollWave,” he wrote.

Sumrall was hired at Tulane back in December of 2023, leading the Green Wave to a 9-5 record and an appearance in the Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl against Florida. His career head coaching record is 32-9.

He talked with On3’s Pete Nakos about the coaching carousel speculation this past winter, making it clear the Tulane job is better than some of the Power Four jobs out there.

“I’d be lying if I didn’t say it comes up with third or fourth recruit that we’re recruiting,” he said. “The question comes up, ‘Coach, how long do you see yourself here? What does the future look like for you here now?’ Well, look, here’s the good news. Tulane has made a long-term commitment to me being here, and that means a lot to me. When I chose to come here was because I thought some things that made sense for me, professionally, and also for my family, my wife and my kids. I’m very happy here.

“And as I look at things, this job in a lot of ways could be better than some Power Four jobs. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Well, we’ve got everything we need here, resourcing-wise, in a lot of ways, to continue to be what we want to be. We’ve got to continue to grow and push the envelope in certain areas, to keep moving forward. We can’t stay stagnant.”

We’ll see if the Marrow domino falling is the first of many to come — and if Sumrall to Kentucky is one of them.
